Hi, I'm Raj.

I design software for people who use it because their job requires it. The person on the other end is not exploring. They are busy, they are mid task, and they need the thing to work.

The work I take on

At Bank of America, associates had a support tool for live calls that was too dense to use mid conversation, so most had stopped opening it. I rebuilt it into an AI assistant that works alongside them on the call, now running across contact center operations and rolling out to 30,000. Nobody using it has time to read, time to learn, or a good moment to be confused. Most of what I did was take things away.

As one of the primary designers on Charles Schwab's Digital Account Open, used by 50,000+ advisors to move client accounts and assets, I was designing inside rules I could not change. Regulation fixes what the flow must contain. The design decides whether anyone can get through it.

The pharmacy scheduler I inherited at McKesson had been abandoned by 90% of its users. We ran the first research that team had ever done, and it changed what I thought the problem was. At mroads there was no design function at all, so I built Paññã from brand through product.

These products look simple when they are working. The simple version takes the longest to find, and most of the work is in what gets cut and why.

Why I do this

I am in this work because it lands on real processes and real people. Not something that gets replaced next quarter, but the tool somebody has to open on a Tuesday morning to get through their job. Making that even slightly better changes something concrete about how a person's day goes.

Some of it has outlasted me. The desk phone I worked on at Cisco is still the one sitting in the offices of almost every company I have joined since. The scheduler I rebuilt at McKesson is in production. Paññã is still running interviews, and I left in 2017. I would love for more of my work to end up the same way, still doing its job somewhere long after I have moved on.

Curiosity

Lately most of my curiosity goes to AI, less as a topic and more as a collaborator. It handles more of the lifting, so I spend more time on the parts that need judgment.

Outside work

Outside of work I spend time sim racing, traveling, and exploring national parks, usually the trails with nobody on them.
